 Call for UNSC Reforms

The G4 countries (India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan) have renewed their calls for urgent reforms of the UN Security Council (UNSC) ahead of the UN’s 80th anniversary in 2025.

Reforms Demanded by G4 Countries (India, Brazil, Germany, Japan):

  1. Permanent Membership Expansion: G4 countries advocate for expanding the permanent membership of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to include themselves, reflecting the current global power dynamics.
  2. Support for Each Other’s Bid: G4 members support each other’s bid for permanent seats in the UNSC.
  3. Representation of Developing Countries: They seek to address the underrepresentation of developing nations, particularly from regions like Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
  4. Veto Power for New Members: The G4 countries also demand that new permanent members, including themselves, be granted veto powers, or that veto power should be reformed to limit its use.

Reforms Demanded by C10 Countries (African Union):

  1. Improved African Representation: The C10 group seeks better representation of African nations in the UNSC, given that Africa is currently underrepresented despite being significantly affected by the Council’s decisions.
  2. Permanent Seats for Africa: The C10, based on the Ezulwini Consensus, advocates for two permanent seats for African countries in the UNSC with veto powers.
  3. Non-Permanent Seats Expansion: Along with permanent seats, they seek the expansion of non-permanent seats to include more African representation.
  4. Reform Based on Common African Position: The C10 supports reforms based on the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration, which highlight the need for democratic representation and equitable geopolitical participation within the UNSC.
