Lecture 1 

During ancient times people have been living near the banks of the river. The earliest people who lived were skilled gatherers. They used to collect fruits another forest produce. They also used to hunt animals for food.

Map Where The Civilisations Flourished In The Past To Present

  • The places where rice was first grown are to the north of the Vindhya.
  • About 4700 years ago, some of the earliest cities flourished on the banks of these rivers.
  • About 2500 years ago, cities developed on the banks of the Ganga and its Tributaries.
  • In ancient times the area along these rivers to the south of the Ganga was known as magadhanow lying in the state of Bihar. 
  • Gradually people started moving which helped develop an enrichment of cultural traditions.
  • Hunter-gatherers moved from place to place in search of food. 
  • Traces of ash have been found in Kurnool. 
  • The fire could have been used for many things: as a source of Light, to roast meat, and to scare away animals.

Origin of India 

  • The word India comes from the Indus, called Sindhu in Sanskrit. 
  • The name Bharata was used for a group of people who lived in the North-West.
  • There is a mention of Bharata in the Rigveda

Importance of manuscript

  • A manuscript is a way of knowing about our past.
  • These manuscripts are written by hand usually on palm leaf.
  • They deal with all kinds of knowledge from religion to medicine.

  • In ancient times many poems, plays, and epics are also written on this. 

 Beginning of agriculture   

  • Around 12,000 years ago, there were major changes in the climate of the world, with a shift to relatively warm conditions.
  • This was also a time when several grain bearing grasses, including wheat, barley, and rice grew naturally in different parts of the subcontinent. 
  • Herding also started. People started domesticating animals. 
  • Now, due to agriculture, there was no need for constant movement.
  • As grain had to be stored for both food and seed, people had to think of ways of storing it.
  • Animals multiply naturally. Besides, if they are looked after carefully, they provide milk, which is an important source of food, and meat.
  • In burzahom(in present-day Kashmir) people built pit-houses which were dug into the ground, with steps leading into them. History NCRT Class 6
  • Archaeologists have also found cooking hearths both inside and outside the huts, which suggests that, depending on the weather, people could cook food either indoors or outdoors. 

Mehrgarh

  • This site is located in a fertile plain, near the Bolan Pass. 
  • Mehrgarhwas probably one of the places where people learned to grow barley and wheat. 
  • It is one of the earliest villages that we know about. 
  • Cotton was probably grown at Mehrangarh from about 7000 years ago. 
  • At this site, many animal bones were found. Bones of wild animals such as the deer, pig, sheep, and goat. 
  • Other finds at mehrgarhinclude remains of square or rectangular houses.

Harappa & other cities

  • The city was found when railway lines were being laid down for the first time in Punjab, engineers stumbled upon the site of Harappa in present-day Pakistan.  
  • This was one of the oldest cities on the subcontinent.
  • Usually, the part to the west was smaller but higher– the citadel. 
  • The part to the east was larger but lower. This is called the lower town. 
  • The bricks were laid in an interlocking pattern and that made the walls strong.
  • Some buildings were constructed on the citadel. For example, in Mohenjo-Daro, a very special thank – great bath. 
  • Cities such as Kalibanganand Lothal had fire altars, where sacrifices may have been performed. 
  • Houses were either one or two stories high. 
  • Harappans probably got copper from present-day Rajasthan
